Before joining the Office of Capital Writs, Ashley Steele received a fellowship from the Yale Initiative for Public Interest Law to conduct a study of the direct appeals in Texas capital cases at Texas Defender Service. Ms. Steele earned her law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 2014. She worked as a student attorney in the Capital Punishment, Criminal Defense, and Actual Innocence Clinics, and interned at Texas Defender Service and the Office of Capital Writs. For her public interest work and 930 hours of pro bono legal work, Ms. Steele was awarded a Graduating Student Award and the Pro Bono Superstar Award. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado in Philosophy and Psychology.
