Elizabeth Stewart began her legal career in Cape Town, where she worked for South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Upon her return to the United States, she practiced family law and later served as an immigration attorney with the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center [now Americans for Immigrant Justice]. In 2010, Ms. Stewart began work at the Office of the Capital Collateral Regional Counsel - South in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where she represented indigent death-sentenced inmates in their post-conviction litigation and appeals in both state and federal courts. She has conducted numerous evidentiary hearings, mostly involving claims of ineffective assistance of counsel for failure to present mitigation, as well as hearings involving false confessions,Brady/Giglioclaims, and issues involving pathology and cause and manner of death. In 2014, Ms. Stewart's advocacy resulted in the reversal of three separate capital murder convictions on behalf of a client. In 2016, Ms. Stewart joined the Office of Capital and Forensic Writs as a senior post-conviction attorney.
